True Food Kitchen
2502 E. Camelback Rd. | 602-774-3488
True Food Kitchen is exactly as the name states. This latest culinary idea has restauranteur Sam Fox partnering with health guru Dr. Andrew Weil to create a menu that features nourishing foods in a fantastic fusion of flavors.
The concept features local fresh ingredients along with hormone-free and natural foods.
Open for lunch and dinner, True Food is located at Biltmore Fashion Plaza where Coffee Plantation used to be. Wheeled planters lead into the front door which opens onto a large space furnished with natural wood tables and wicker chairs.
A counter with bar stools looks onto the open kitchen, but True Food has gone even one step further with this popular concept. Tables near the kitchen hold crates of fresh, perfect vegetables that prep chefs are cutting up for your dinner.
The early evening was a typically warm one that Arizona winters are known for, but we still opted to eat inside rather than on the patio.
We quenched our thirst with the delicious Organic Honey Lemonade ($3), that the pleasant and plentiful staff replaced throughout the evening as soon as a glass was empty.
Companion swore the evening would turn cool eventually, so decided he needed an infusion of some soup. His large bowl of Miso Soup with Wild Mushrooms and Scallions ($6) was loaded with goodies. This Miso fan proclaime it the best he had ever had.
My Shrimp Dumplings with Shitake Mushrooms, Ginger and Cilantro ($10) swam in a bowl of dipping sauce. This appetizer was a tasty trio of tastes and with a slight increase in size would be a popular entrée choice.
We split one of the interesting individual pizzas, intrigues by the healthy crust made from organic flour, spelt (an ancient wheat grain from medieval times) and flax seed.
Our choice of the Wild Shrimp, Caramelized Onion and Roasted Peppers ($12) was an amazing arrangement of toppings that would be the star of any family owned Brooklyn pizza joint.
The healthy menu motivated me to forego my usual beef cravings in favor of the Sustainable Salmon with Roasted Apples, Carrots and Celery Root ($16). The generous slab of fish was moist and brushed lightly with mustard vinaigrette.
The browned vegetable fruit medley beneath was my favorite part of the meal with its aromatic mix.
My meat-loving companion could not resist the Steak Tacos with Anasazi Beans ($14). Two hearty open shell tacos were loaded with tender chunks of steak, pieces of fresh avocado, finely grates queso fresco white cheese and a tangy tomatillo salsa.
The bowl of beans were whole like ranch beans and flavored with just the right amount of heat.
For truly health-conscious diners, True Food Kitchen’s menu offers 16 vegetarian, 6 vegan and 10 gluten-free selections. Menu items are marked with a letter to denote these offerings and also if a tofu substitution is available.
