The Breakfast Club
4400 N. Scottsdale Road ~ 480.222.2582

Usually, when people think of breakfast, that place Denny started years ago come to mind. There is nothing here that will remind you of Denny and his joint and that’s probably a good thing.

The Breakfast Club, or as the menu punctuates, “The B.C.”, has a nice early A.M. ambiance. Its polished concrete floors cheerfully reflect the sun coming in from the abundant windows. The cacophany is one of coffee cups being stirred, newspapers being rattled and barristas laughing with customers.

Most patrons are hyper-focused on their breakfast partner, the paper, or the anticipation of the grind of the day. Some seem sufficiently caffeinated to hear the paint dry. I can’t wait to hear it too.

We are offered a seat inside and refuse. No sense in wasting a 69° mid-October morning. To the patio, please. Nice tables and chairs that rock a bit from the uneven sidewalk are tolerable, due to the coffee that will soon stabilize us.

We order the usual fare of iced coffee and espressos and study the menu as if we are going to the electric chair tomorrow. With the certainty of “The Donald” my associate commands a Cinnamon Challah French Toast ($9.95), which consists of French (or Freedom, depending on your political point) toast, candied nuts, seasonal berries and dark Vermont maple syrup.

The lady of this trio is certain that the Traditional Eggs Benedict with Carved Virginia Ham and Hollandaise ($8.95) is the right choice, which turns out to be a rather astute one at that.

Myself, I like to be gluttonous, and that requires the full measure of the BC’s B&G, which is short for the Jalapeno Biscuits and Sausage Gravy, accented with Fontina cheese, and two eggs over-medium ($9.50). The sides on this one included fresh fruit and cubed potatoes, red onions and bell peppers interlaced. Perfect.

The view is of Scottsdale Road, looking directly at the Galleria, which is normally a tranquil sight of overpriced real estate. Unfortunately, Waterfront construction is in first gear, literally. Huge dirt transport trucks rumble by about every ten minutes. It’s noisy and dusty, but not enough to deter huge portions of great food and stout cups of Joe.

With weather improving and construction shifting into second gear, this place is a great start to any morning, and they serve lunch too! Call for hours.
